DEK Trio
DEK Trio is an improvisational trio formed in September 2014 featuring American reedist Ken Vandermark alongside two prominent Austrian musicians: pianist Elisabeth Harnik and drummer Didi Kern .
The trio’s name is derived from the first initials of its three members—Didi Kern, Elisabeth Harnik, and Ken Vandermark . Their music draws from a remarkably diverse range of influences: Harnik’s background as an acclaimed new music composer, Kern’s extensive work in the European underground rock and experimental scene (including the noise-rock trio BulBul), and Vandermark’s decades of experience across contemporary jazz and free improvisation .
Critics have described the group’s aesthetic as “inclusive, expressive, and instantaneous”—a meeting of three distinct musical personalities that results in an organic, powerfully immediate dialogue blending driving rhythmic intensity, delicate piano textures, and Vandermark’s distinctive reed work.
